viDoc RTK is a hardware device that, together with the Pix4Dcatch application, georeferences images with centimeter accuracy. Simply put, it is a device that has an RTK (Real Time Kinematic) antenna that allows location correction to achieve extremely good accuracy.

It comes in both phone and tablet versions. Georeferencing is done in real time, the viDoc can be connected to any NTRIP service (Networked Transport of RTCM via Internet Protocol, a protocol by which corrections are streamed over the Internet from a base station to a rover to achieve precision at the cm level).

In the video below at minute 6, you can see how the viDoc RTK rover is used with the PIX4Dcatch app in a very cool and simple project:

What technology does viDoc use and how does it work?

RTK (Real Time Kinematic) is a process of observing your current location using satellite positioning. The location is then corrected using data from a base station, a known static location where a GNSS receiver is located that calculates its position corrections. These corrections are then sent to an RTK antenna and correct the position accuracy of the collected data. Thus, an RTK antenna allows data collection at the best position accuracy.

*Wi-Fi-only iPad models do not contain an internal GPS. Thus, projects will not be geolocated unless used with the viDoc RTK rover.

**You need to measure and enter the offset.

***The new iPhone 14 Pro models are compatible with PIX4Dcatch and the viDoc RTK rover. Until official camera offsets are provided, iPhone 13 Pro model offsets will apply. It seems that there is a difference of a few millimeters between these two versions. This amount of error will be present until accurate measurements are provided.

Use cases

Reconstructing accidents in 3D with subcentimeter precision using drones and viDoc

The field of accident reconstruction is central to analyzing why an accident occurred and how similar accidents could be prevented in the future. As part of accident analysis, many professionals now perform 3D reconstructions of accidents. A 3D model of an accident scene can be used by police, insurers and experts to investigate vehicle collisions.

Managing the landscape during construction brings a unique challenge: preserving the old environment while building something new. The use of photogrammetry and ground scanning in this industry has already been proven – resulting in a 64% increase in profits when combined with Pix4D’s build platform, PIX4Dcloud. Now viDoc is integrated into construction landscape management projects.

Terrestrial data collection with photogrammetry is a growing area of interest for many industries, whether in landscaping and real estate or more focused on geospatial and building surveying purposes. A wide range of rovers are available, but they can be expensive, cumbersome and difficult to transport. The viDoc RTK rover provides an ideal solution to balance the need for GPS accuracy with high maneuverability.

Several use cases for the viDoc RTK rover are: scanning a historic stone bridge or land and boat mapping of a harbor.

A full guide on how to use viDoc RTK with the PIX4Dcatch app can be found here.

An example of an underground scanning project made with viDoc and pix4Dcatch can be accessed below. The project includes both DSM (Digital Surface Model), Point Cloud and 3D Textured Mesh, obtained by photogrammetry and LiDAR data.

Why use a viDoc RTK rover?

Last July, the accuracy of measurements with the viDoc RTK rover was certified by Bureau Veritas as less than 5 centimeters and had a margin of error for volume calculations of less than 5%. According to Pix4D, these results are equivalent or superior to other topography methods, namely GPS or total stations.
